Yeah, I get it. Most people think places like LA and San Diego always cost a lot.

Actually, that’s not really true. Personally, I spent about a week traveling across different parts of Southern California, visiting beaches, parks, and local spots.

To be honest, it took me about 3 days to put this guide together after exploring and collecting all the useful spots.

So if you are planning a trip and want to save money while still having a great time, this guide might really help you.

1. Relax at Santa Monica Beach

Santa Monica is iconic and the beach itself is totally free for everyone. You can spread your towel to soak up the sun or watch the waves crash, which is a really peaceful.

The pier is nearby, and while the rides cost money, walking the wooden planks is free and gives you a great view of the ocean.

It is a bit crowded sometimes, but that is part of the fun.

2. Hike to the Hollywood Sign

Have you ever wanted a photo with that famous sign without paying for a tour?

There are several trails in Griffith Park, and my favorite is the Mt. Hollywood Trail because it is a bit of a climb but the view is absolutely worth the effort.

You get to see the whole city of Los Angeles and get really close to those big white letters, which is a great way to get some exercise.

3. Explore the Griffith Observatory

After your hike, you should head over to the Observatory because the building is beautiful and entering to look at the exhibits is free.

The best part is the view at night when you can see the city lights twinkling below, and it feels sort of magical when they have free telescopes outside.

You can look at the moon for free on clear nights, so be sure to check their schedule before going.

4. Walk Through Balboa Park in San Diego

San Diego is a gem, and Balboa Park is its heart because this park is huge and full of gardens that are absolutely free to enter.

I highly recommend the Botanical Building because it has so many exotic plants and a very pretty lily pond right outside.

You can walk around and look at the Spanish style buildings, and while the museums inside cost money, the architecture is free to enjoy.

5. Visit the Getty Center

The Getty Center is one of my favorite places in the world, and believe it or not, admission to this art museum is free.

You do have to pay for parking if you drive, but the art collections and the circular gardens are totally amazing to see.

The museum has famous paintings and statues, and outside, the cactus garden is really neat because you can see the whole coastline from the balcony.

6. Stroll the Venice Beach Boardwalk

Venice Beach is unlike any other place because it is sort of wild and colorful, and walking the boardwalk is like a free show.

You will see street performers and artists, and I really enjoy watching the skaters at the famous skate park near the sand.

The murals on the walls are also very cool, and you can spend hours just people watching or looking at the funky shops.

7. See the Stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

This is a classic tourist thing to do because walking on Hollywood Boulevard is free and you can find your favorite actor’s star on the sidewalk.

It is a long walk, so make sure to wear comfy shoes while you hunt for your favorite names.

The Chinese Theatre is also right there, and you can look at the handprints in the cement for free which is a piece of movie history.

8. Visit the California Science Center

If you like space, you will love this spot because the main galleries at the California Science Center are free for all visitors.

You can see real airplanes and cool science experiments, and I think it is very kid friendly and easy to understand for everyone.

The best part used to be the Space Shuttle Endeavour, and although they are building a new display for it now, there is still so much to see.

It is located in Exposition Park, and there are also beautiful rose gardens nearby that are perfect for a stroll.

9. Hike in Joshua Tree National Park

This one is a bit of a drive, but it is worth it if you have a National Park pass or visit on a free day. Once inside, the hiking is endless and the trees look like something from a dream book because of their strange shapes.

I love the Hidden Valley trail because it is a short loop and very easy, and the rock formations are huge and fun to scramble on.

It feels like another planet, so make sure to stay for the sunset when the colors are truly incredible across the desert.

10. Walk the San Clemente Beach Trail

This is a hidden gem in Orange County because it is a dirt path that runs right along the ocean for several miles.

It is very flat and easy for kids, and I think it is so refreshing to have the waves right next to you.

You can watch the trains go by right next to the trail, which is a unique experience that you won’t find many other places.

There are plenty of spots to stop and touch the water, and parking in some nearby lots is actually pretty cheap if you arrive early.

11. Visit the Old Mission Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara is known as the American Riviera, and the Mission is a beautiful old building with a very long history.

While entering the museum costs a little bit, looking at the architecture from the outside is free and the park in front is lovely.

The rose garden across the street is also free and smells wonderful when the flowers bloom, so you can take great photos here.

12. Explore The Broad in Downtown LA

The Broad is a contemporary art museum that is free to enter, but you usually need to book a ticket online to get in.

I suggest doing this early because they go fast, and the building itself looks like a giant honeycomb made of white stone.

Inside, you will find giant sculptures and colorful paintings that are very weird but make the visit fun for everyone. It is right next to Walt Disney Concert Hall which is another cool building to see.

13. Window Shop on Rodeo Drive

You might not be able to buy a thousand dollar bag, and I certainly can’t, but walking down Rodeo Drive is free for everyone.

It is the most famous shopping street in Beverly Hills, and the palm trees and fancy cars are fun to look at.

It feels like you are in a movie, and you can look at the window displays which are often like little art galleries.

14. Visit the Original Farmers Market

The Farmers Market at 3rd and Fairfax is historic and has been around since 1934, so walking through the stalls is a fun way to see history.

You can see all kinds of fresh fruit and treats, and I love the smell of the coffee. It is a great place to wander, and if you get hungry, you can find cheap snacks like a slice of pizza or a taco.

It is right next to The Grove outdoor mall, and both spots are fun to explore together without spending much money at all.

15. Check Out the La Brea Tar Pits

This is right in the middle of the city where there are actual pits of sticky tar bubbling up from the ground for you to see. You can walk around the park and see them for free, and although it is kind of smelly, it is very interesting.

They have statues of mammoths that look very real, and you can see where scientists are still digging for ancient bones today.

While the museum costs money, the park and the pits are free, making it a very unique thing to see in a big city.

16. Watch the Sunset at Sunset Cliffs

San Diego has some of the best views, and Sunset Cliffs Natural Park is the best spot for the end of your day. You can park and walk along the edge where the view of the Pacific Ocean is huge.

The Fullerton Arboretum is a hidden treasure on a college campus, and while they ask for a small donation, it is very cheap to enter.

You can walk through different zones like a desert or a forest, and it feels like you are far away. There is a small lake with ducks and turtles, and it is very quiet and away from the city noise which I find very relaxing.

It is a great place for kids to run around and see nature, and the paths are easy for everyone to follow.

20. Visit Echo Park Lake

Echo Park Lake is a beautiful spot in Los Angeles where you can walk all the way around the water on a flat path.

The lotus flowers are famous here, and when they bloom, the lake looks like a painting with the city in the background.

You can see the downtown skyline behind the palm trees, and while there are swan boats you can rent, walking the loop is free.

It is a very popular spot for locals, and I think it shows a very friendly side of life in the city.
